| Video Discription | I made this Rubens' Tube at the Institute of Making at University College London. How does it work? There's a rubber membrane at one end and, when this is set to vibrate using sound (or trumpet in this case), standing waves are set up in the propane contained inside the tube. These standing waves are just sections of high and low gas pressure, and these different pressures make the flames larger or smaller, so the flames adopt the shape of the waveform inside the tube.
