| Video Discription | (15 Jan 1996) Russian/Nat Russian forces using artillery, mortar and helicopters have blasted a village where Chechen rebels are holding more than 100 hostages. The Kremlin says the attack was launched because President Yeltsin believed further delays would threaten the lives of the hostages. Those captives are now caught in the crossfire of a full scale battle on the border of Dagestan and Chechnya. So far it's not known if any have been killed in the fighting between the Russian army and their Chechen rebel captors. The attack, involving artillery and helicopter gun ships, began after an extended deadline for the release of the captives expired on Monday. Gunfire crackled and explosions could be heard every second around the tiny village of Pervomayskaya, on the bleak fields of the Russian republic of Dagestan. White flashes and smoke poured from the village, where several buildings were on fire and the roof of a school was blown off in a direct hit. The order to attack the village where Chechen guerrillas were holding the hostages was given on Monday after reports that the gunmen had begun killing their captives. The Russians troops are trying to break through the Chechen's defences and break up the gang into several groups. They had been insisting that the rebels free the hostages and give up their arms, while the Chechens stood firm on demanding a guarantee of safe passage back to their breakaway republic. Shortly before the Russians began firing, a general announced that negotiations had failed. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "We could not reach an agreement with the rebels and the talks have broken down. We are starting military action." SUPERCAPTION: Major General Alexander Mikhailov, Federal Security Service But the Russians insist the hostages being held by the rebels are in no danger from the air strikes. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Our air power is working extremely accurately. Not one location where the hostages are being held has been damaged. People can see a lot of small arms fire but that is just the Chechens fighting back. I can confirm that the three places where the hostages are being held are safe from Russian fire." SUPERCAPTION: Major General Alexander Mikhailov, Federal Security Service Accurate casualty figures are not yet available. But many fear that the Chechen rebels will kill their civilian hostages. The Russian army has confirmed that one soldier has been killed and at least three others were wounded. There was no word on other casualties. A large number of Russian ambulances stood by. And a field hospital has been set up in the area.
