| Video Discription | (20 Sep 1999) Russian/Nat A top Russian military commander says the Russian army has killed more than 2-thousand Islamic rebels who infiltrated Dagestan from the neighbouring breakaway republic of Chechnya. Colonel General Valery Manilov, deputy head of the General Staff, said Moscow had lost 104 of its own men in a two-month campaign in the Caucasus Mountain region. Manilov added that Russian armed forces intend to keep up airstrikes against terrorist strongholds, including those on the territory of the breakaway province of Chechnya. He didn't rule out a ground operation against Chechnya but refused to comment on media reports about preparations for such an operation. For now, Russian interior ministry troops and army units will be stationed along the Chechen border to prevent any incursions inside Dagestan, Manilov said. Manilov was at pains to stress that airstrikes are aimed not at Chechnya. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Of course, the losses are heavy. We don't want to compare them to the casualties suffered by the terrorists because, in my opinion, all of them should be completely destroyed."
