Seafarers are on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic, playing an essential role in ensuring the stability of the supply chain. However, the crisis has led to difficult working conditions for seafarers, including uncertainties and difficulties about port access, re-supply, crew changeovers, and repatriation.
The day recognizes the unique and vital role and contribution of seafarers in the global community.
AN ODE TO THE SEAFARER- HUMANITY'S FIRST ADVENTURER
Since the dawn of time man has always been fascinated by the unknown.
To explore it; understand it; perhaps even conquer it.
Now, take a moment to stand in the shoes of the first person,
Who several thousand years ago pushed his wooden plank onto an endless ocean.
With its crashing waves and unknowable depths–to find out what lay beyond.
His family would have begged him to forget his impossible dream;
His friends would have termed him mad;
His own soul might have been riddled with self-doubt.
And yet he soldiered on–the world's first seaman, answering the call of adventure.
Every seaman since is a descendent of that original adventurer.
And while machines and technology have aided him; and training and controls have saved him
He still has to cross seas that remain as dangerous as it is beautiful.
But perhaps most affecting of all are the tears of the people he leaves behind.
Yes, being a man of the sea has never been an easy job.
He works tirelessly for days and nights minding the people and goods entrusted to him
Fighting waves, winds and pirates to make sure the shipment reach their destination in time,
Little realizing that cargo he carried runs industries and business, connects continents and feeds people
He albeit, remains unseen and unsung, dutifully playing his part in a larger design
And so, the seaman goes forth–in search of his horizon
Here’s to that seaman among us–humanity’s first adventurer.
