Rehman walking away STORYLINE: The lead negotiators of Germany and the G77 and China group met for talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Thursday amid a stand-off between developed and developing countries over the issue of a compensation fund for climate disasters, known as "loss and damage" in negotiators' parlance. Poorer countries that bear the brunt of climate change, from rising sea levels to extreme flooding, stepped up the urgency, accusing richer polluters of stalling, and said they cannot wait another year for the creation of a fund to pay for damages. Earlier in the day, Sherry Rehman, Climate Minister for Pakistan, said developing countries would continue to press hard for a deal on the issue of 'loss and damage' at this year's UN climate talks in Egypt. Rehman told reporters on Thursday that the group of countries she chairs wants "at the very least a political announcement of intent" on rich polluters providing new financial aid to poor nations for the effects of global warming.
