| Video Discription | I kept looking for online recordings of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" in Middle English, and every single one sounded like the reader was quite unable to reliably produce any vowels absent from modern English, and introducing all kinds of demonstrably anachronistic features (monophthongization of the TAUT vowel, various raisings of /ă/ and /ā/) based on modern speech habits. And many were seemingly uninformed by the most recent work on Middle English versification (as I had been before Nelson Goering set me straight), and the structure of the alliterative long line. We now know a great deal more about schwa-realization in the language of this text than we used to. So I guess if you want a thing done right you gotta do it your own self. I recorded the first two stanzas of the poem, with the beginning snippet of the third, in reconstruction. I also synched it up with my own modern English verse-translation so you can read along. Eventually I plan to do a much, much longer version of this. But there are only so many hours in a day and I occasionally need to do things like sleep and use the bathroom.
