In today's episode, we're tackling a common issue that many Excel users face - wrong date formats. We all know how important it is to have accurate and usable data, but what do you do when you receive a CSV file with dates in the wrong format? Whether it's day-month-year or month-day-year, it can be a real headache to work with. But fear not, because I'm here to show you a quick and easy solution. So, let's say you receive a CSV file from a colleague in another country, and the dates are in the wrong format for your location. For me, being in the United States, the wrong format would be day-month-year. But if you're somewhere else, just imagine it's reversed. When we open the file in Excel, we see that the dates are not recognized as real dates. This means we can't format them or use them in calculations. So what's the solution? Well, some may suggest changing your international settings before opening the file, but I believe there's a faster and more efficient way. Simply go to your "Windows Explorer" and find the CSV file. Then, rename it to a text file. When we open a text file in Excel, it takes us through a wizard where we can declare the date format in step 3. Here, we can specify that our dates are in day-month-year format and voila! The dates are now imported correctly. This little trick is a lifesaver when dealing with wrong date formats in CSV files. And the best part is, you don't have to change your international settings. Just remember to change the file to a text file before opening it in Excel.
