| Video Discription | Spaniards celebrated as the Christmas lottery, known as "El Gordo" (The Fat One) spread millions of euros across the country on Wednesday (December 22). Minutes after a pair of schoolchildren from San Ildefonso school sang the lucky number 86148 at Spains' Royal Theatre, Javier Monino, the lottery seller that sold most of the tickets from his shop inside Atocha train station opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate the millions he delivered. "Good, a bit nervous but good. You never expect this, you always have the idea of selling it (the first prize) but it seems that sometimes it happens," he said. Monino bought the shop from Francisco Javier Garcia who retired just a few weeks before the draw. Garcia was shocked when a reporter told him that his former shop has delivered more than 500 million euros. "I wasn't able to calculate it yet (how many tickets of the first prize he sold) but it was the 130 series," he said. The prize also brought joy to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary islands. A young couple showed their winning ticket as people sprayed champagne behind them. The colourful tradition of the "El Gordo" Christmas lottery dates back to 1812 and enjoys mass participation from Spaniards eager for a piece of the sizeable prize pot, which this year reached 2.41 billion euros ($2.72 billion). In the months leading up to the December 22 draw, which gives out many small prizes rather than one big jackpot, Spaniards club together with friends, family or colleagues to buy tickets, often favouring particular vendors or significant numbers. The rules allow for the same number to be sold multiple times, leading to the winning ticket often being sold across several different towns or cities. El Gordo is run by the Spanish lottery, and, after the winners are paid, the proceeds fund the state budget. Spanish lottery estimates that this year Spaniards spent an average of 66.6 euros per person on tickets. The most common ticket costs 20 euros, offering up to 400,000 euros in prize money, minus taxes. ........................................................................................
