| Video Discription | Learn how to split firewood using a wedge and sledge hammer. Most people attack the log by trying to split it right through the middle. This is the aggressive approach. This might work well on smaller logs, but it is often very difficult to split a really big hardwood log. The solution is to take a big log apart piece by piece, removing small pieces from the edge. As you do this, the log gets smaller and smaller. If all goes well, the problem log ends up in pieces on the ground. It’s much easier to take little pieces off of the edge than it is to try and split the log right through the middle. Break a big wood splitting job down into little pieces. The job will be much easier. In the video, I use a brick hammer and I demonstrate the technique on a deck. In general, it is better to use a sledge hammer, because it can exert a much greater force onto the wedge, by way of a well placed hammer swing. The log in the video is pine, which is relatively easy to split. The technique really comes into it’s own when you are splitting big pieces of hardwood, which can be difficult to turn into firewood. The exact splitting pattern doesn’t matter, just take some wood off the edge of log with every subsequent split. I also wouldn’t try splitting logs on your deck, because it will probably damage the deck. This video is made for someone who already knows how to use sledge hammer and wedge. Splitting wood with an wedge and sledge hammer can be dangerous if you don’t know how to do it correctly, because it involves a lot of force.
