The two Chinese ships, marked as fishing boats, cut across the bow of the Philippine navy vessel Benguet on Saturday as it sailed towards the Spratlys. The boats then approached the tank landing ship from either side. Later, two Chinese warships appeared 15 nautical miles away. Philippine officials described the incident as Manila's first direct confrontation with China over the Spratlys. The 39 journalists were travelling at the invitation of the Philippines government, despite protests from Beijing.
