Squirting (SQ) is the involuntary expulsion of fluid from the female urethra following stimulation of the anterior vaginal wall before or during orgasm. The mechanism underlying SQ has not been established. The main component of squirt fluid is urine, but may also contain fluid from Skene's glands (female prostate). This is supported by data based on ultrasonographic bladder monitoring and biochemical analyses. “Skene’s glands” (also known as the lesser vestibular glands, periurethral glands, or paraurethral glands) are located on the anterior wall of the vagina, around the lower end of the urethra. They drain into the urethra and near the urethral opening and may be near or a part of the G-spot. These glands are surrounded with tissue that swells with blood during sexual arousal. These glands secrete fluid during sexual arousal, which helps with lubrication. In some people, Skene’s glands may function similar to ejaculation and produce a mucus-like substance during orgasm. Skene’s glands develop from the same cells that become the prostate in men or people assigned male at birth (AMAB). For this reason, some refer to Skene’s glands as the female prostate. Until 2011, all female orgasmic expulsions of fluids were referred to as female ejaculation (FE). The fluid was known to be either from the paraurethral glands (inc Skene’s glands) or as a result of coital incontinence (CI). However, SQ, female ejaculation (FE) and coital incontinence (CI) are different. SQ is a transurethral orgasmic expulsion from the urinary bladder, while FE is the secretion of a very small amount of fluid from the paraurethral glands. Both phenomena may occur simultaneously. Coital incontinence is divided into penetration and orgasmic forms. Penetration incontinence occurs more frequently and is usually caused by stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
