The Stabat Mater is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword would pierce the heart of Mary (Luke 2:35). The text originates from the 13th century and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure (1221-1274), and Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306) -- with da Todi as the most likely author. Associated often with the Stations of the Cross, it was prescribed as a Sequence in 1727 for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15).
