| Video Discription | India was one of the early producers of steel with an integrated steel plant set up in India in the early 1900s by Jamshedji and Dorabji Tata. Tata Steel, continues to be the largest steel producer in India. Today, India has the second largest steel industry in the world, behind China, and India has an ambitious plan to raise this capacity from 120 million tonnes per annum to 300 million tonnes per annum. India has abundant raw material sources of iron ore. The government now wants to discourage exports of iron ore and earmark it for the domestic industry. Apart from the integrated steel plants, India also has a large number of secondary steel producers, small Electric Arc furnaces, and companies melting steel scrap. We also have a large number of downstream producers, of Cold Rolling mills, rod mills, and other products. The government has also notified a PLI for the steel industry to encourage the production of speciality steels. While the Steel industry has had a chequered past in the last 20-30 years, with multiple up and down cycles, today it is in the pink of health. While somewhat subdued in the current year, the industry had blockbuster profits last year. We have done videos on some of the prominent players in India in this industry viz.
