| Video Discription | Evidence-based studies show there are 3-5 critical steps for communicating with people who may be contemplating suicide. BEING THERE is one of those life-saving steps. Being physically present, speaking on the phone, or any other way that shows support for the person at risk increases connectedness and limits their isolation. This acts as a protective factor against suicide, limits the escalation from suicidal thoughts to suicidal actions, and serves as a buffer against hopelessness and psychological pain. BEING THERE is the topic of our first of hopefully many short films commissioned by the Center for Japanese Mental Health (CJMH) as part of its mission to improve mental health amongst the Japanese community, especially those Japanese who live and/or work outside Japan.
