He was one of the pillars of Bengal's renaissance . His childhood name was Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay . Due to his great erudition in Sanskrit language and philosophy , he was conferred the title of 'Vidyasagar' by Sanskrit College in his student life. He was a supporter of women's education. Due to her efforts , many girls' schools were established in Calcutta and in other places. At that time the condition of widows in Hindu society was very deplorable. He prepared public opinion for widow remarriage . Due to his efforts , the Widow-Remarriage Act was passed in 1856 . He married his only son to a widow. He also opposed child marriage. His work of making Bengali language prose simple and modern will always be remembered. He also simplified and rationalized the alphabet of the Bengali script . He established hundreds of schools to teach Bengali and also arranged night schools. He tried for the propagation of Sanskrit language.
