Officially called: The 42nd Street Shuttle is a New York City Subway shuttle train service that operates in Manhattan. The shuttle is sometimes referred to as the Grand Central/Times Square Shuttle, since these are the only two stations it serves. The shuttle runs at all times except late nights, with trains running on two tracks underneath 42nd Street between Times Square and Grand Central. With two stations, it is the shortest regular service in the system by number of stops, running about 2,402 feet (732 m) in 90 seconds. The shuttle is used by over 120,000 passengers every day who's mostly transferring between Lexington Ave Line (4,5,6) and 7th Ave/Broadway Line (IRT: 1,2,3), and also Broadway Line (BMT: N,Q,R,W). Plus there is a connection to 8th avenue line (A,C,E) as well. The history of this Shuttle service is pretty interesting and always brings a lot of questions and suggestions. But the most interesting part that this is one of the oldest lines in the city: it was opened in 1904 as a part of First Subway Line (IRT). And the Shuttle service started in 1918 - which makes it 103 years old (in 2021).
