The threat is especially pertinent in urban areas, which are often densely populated. As public transportation systems around the world strive to phase out fossil fuels, Stockholm is proof that cities can thrive upon transitioning to renewable energy sources. Since 2017, trains and buses in the Swedish capital have run fully on renewable energy. Nearly 800,000 people in the city use public transport every day. By 2030, Stockholm aims to have fossil-free maritime traffic and cut emissions by 75% compared to 2009. Globally, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) promotes sustainable, low-emission transport to reduce the sector’s contribution to air pollution and the climate crisis. The Government of the Sweden will host World Environment Day 2022 in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The year 2022 marks 50 years since the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment – the 1972 Stockholm Conference that led to the creation of UNEP and designating 5 June every year as World Environment Day. On 2 and 3 June 2022, Stockholm will host Stockholm+50, an international meeting convened by the UN General Assembly that commemorates 50 years since the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, which made the environment a pressing global issue for the first time and led to the establishment of UNEP. On 5 June 2022, the city will host World Environment Day, the biggest international day for the environment. Led by UNEP, the event will engage countries, businesses and millions of people from across the world to protect the planet. “Only One Earth” is the campaign slogan, with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”.
