| Video Discription | 'Puthiya vaanam' (The sky is new) from the Tamil movie Anbe vaa (Come, My Love - Tamil - 1966) was based on the American film 'Come September', 1961. MGR (M.G. Ramachandran) played the hero and it is a song of ideals, which was a regular feature of his movies. The hero, a wealthy industrialist, arrives in Shimla (the capital of Himachal Pradesh, a Himalayan State in northern India) for a vacation and proceeds to his bungalow, enjoying the sights and sounds on the way. He sees a new sky and Earth and the world awakening to a new Sun. He sings that nobody questions about one’s nationality or discriminates based on caste. Human beings pursued the path of Love, worshipped Nature and showed in life that the mind is as high as the mountain peaks. MGR holds a suitcase and a cane in his hands during the entire song, excepting when he holds a couple of children without the suitcase. His handling of the baggage was so effortless and harmonious it is doubtful if any other actor would have succeeded so well or even agreed to such a challenging choreography. Another interesting aspect is that the lyrics is about showers of snow and flowers everywhere but the visuals don't have that. Perhaps the weather failed them and a natural shower of flowers was impossible to find and yet MGR's convincing action compensates the missing elements a good deal. The movie and its songs were one of the high grounds of MGR’s film career spanning five decades (1936-1987) that started when he was 18. (Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran was born in Nawalapitiya, Kandy District, British Ceylon (Srilanka) in a Malayali family to Melakkath Gopalan Menon and Maruthur Satyabhama from Palakkad, in the modern-day Indian state of Kerala.) The lyrics were written by Vaali to music set by Vishwanathan and sung by TM Soundararajan. MGR, on invitation, did a university-lecture tour in the U.S. in 1971, during which he met Gregory Peck, a celebrated Hollywood actor. Charismatic and generous by nature, MGR launched his own political party years later and was thrice elected, consecutively, as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - between 1977 and 87. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour in, 1987. All copyright belongs to the original owners.
