| Video Discription | An early pre-Islamic Arabic poetic text (ca. 1st century BC — 1st century CE) from a Safaitic inscription, found in Northeastern Jordan and published in 2017 by Dr. Ahmad Al-Jallad. My reading follows his hypothetical vocalization. Seeing as how it is now hard to deny that Safaitic was — in every sense worth caring about — a variety of Arabic, I figured it would be cool to offer a version transcribed into modern Arabic graphemes. Al-Jallad's article on the inscription may be found here https://www.academia.edu/28814886/Al_Jallad_2017_Pre_Islamic_%E1%B8%A4am%C4%81sah_Verses_from_Northeastern_Jordan_A_New_Safaitic_Poetic_Text_from_Marabb_al_Shuraf%C4%81%CA%BE_with_further_remarks_on_the_%CA%BF%C4%92n_%CA%BFAvdat_Inscription_and_KRS_2453 Note on my reading of the name of the Goddess Allāt: Unlike Allāh, this word has a normal has non-velarized /l:/ in transmitted literary Arabic (including in all the Qira'at) but Dr. Al-Jallād informs me that the name has survived among Bedouin in Jordan with a velarized [ł] (in the form of the personal name عبداللات 'ʕabdullāt'). It seems to me that Allāt may have originally had velarization too, and got stripped of it to heighten the contrast with الله at some point in the Islamic period. This is very speculative (even more so than many other speculative reconstructed features you hear me articulate on this channel), and is open to the objection that we don't even know where, when or how the /l/ of Allāh became velarized in the first place, let alone whether Allāt would have been affected by whatever that was. It could be a bit of dialect phonology from a form of early Arabic where /a/ induced velarization in adjacent segments, perhaps spoken at a cultic site prominent for venerating Allāh. The velarization would have then traveled along with the name to other dialects — in which case Allāt might well not have been affected. Or else it might have been affected later as velarization spread analogically from Allāh to Allāt. In any case, I (well, I and the three audio clones of me) chose to read Allāt with a dark [ł] in the final supplication.
