David Lowery’s new film takes the niche up a notch with a kingly and ominous adaptation of the 14th century anonymous work Sir Gawain and the titular Knight, inspired by many Welsh themes, with a beheading game lifted from 8th century Irish mythology. From trailers alone, there’s a lot going on, and I can tell you that seeing the film increases the chaos and conjures many a’question. With gorgeous landscapes that remind us of both Lord of the Rings and more ominous fare like Midsommar, animals who talk, animals who stalk, a timeless, anachronistic take on costume design, color theory we haven’t really seen since the mid 90s, there’s so much to dig into on production design alone! And that ending? What was going on with that? What is a dream? What is a vision? Am I a vision? Are we human or are we dancers? How is Dev Patel so good at everything all the time? I hear ya, I hear ya. And baby, I’m covering it all. So hie thee hither, my strong lads, pretty lasses, and brave souls of sordid spectrums. Let’s talk about the ogham, the oh mys, the bears, the foxes, and the way Dev Patel makes everyone want to draw him on horseback.
