Did you know though, that the werewolf is far older than we thought. The earliest surviving example of man-to-wolf transformation is found in The Epic of Gilgamesh from around 2,100 BC, where he rejects the advances of Ishtar, the goddess of fertility and love, out of fear that she would transform him into a wolf as she did a previous admirer. But given that they were a threat to people, tales often focus on methods of revealing werewolves, protecting oneself from them, and ending them while their origins are shrouded in mystery and legend, with many different stories about how they came to be. But don’t you worry, because we are here to list them for you. Throughout history, people have been fascinated by the idea of a person transforming into a powerful, animalistic creature. The term "lycanthropy," meaning the ability of a human being to undergo transformation into a wolf or to gain wolf-like characteristics, is a combination of the Greek roots lukos, meaning wolf, and anthropos, meaning man.Belief in lycanthropy goes back to early tribal societies. Shamans and witch doctors were believed to possess the ability to attune with nature to the point that they could transform into animals. Often these animals were quadra-pideal predatory animals, such as leopards, jackals, bears, coyotes, and wolves. One of the most well-known legends about the origin of werewolves involves the power of the full moonhas been popularized in countless movies, TV shows, and books. According to this myth, a person could become a werewolf by being bitten by another werewolf during a full moon. Once the curse was transmitted, the person would experience a painful transformation during each full moon, turning into a wolf-like creature with heightened strength, speed, and senses. However, this is just one of many legends about the origin of werewolves. Some legends claim that werewolves were created by witches or sorcerers who made deals with the devil. In exchange for dark powers, the sorcerer was transformed into a wolf-like creature that could shift between human and animal forms.
