I have coached some players who still struggle with tight turns even after playing hockey for years. There are some key points that will help and Matt addresses some of them in this video. I have found that staying low, and having a good base also help. In this video Matt explains what the upper body and lower body should be doing in a tight turn so that speed and control can be maintained. Matt also moves his stick quickly in order to initiate the turn. Matt explains it this way. "The stick is moved into the change of direction. It appears to be behind me but is guiding where I am going. Because I don't have a puck the rotation of the upper body initiates greater activation in the lower body to make the turn tighter and maintain speed. Two hands on the stick through a tight turn with no puck often promotes a forward lean and poor body position causing excessive digging and slowing. The same position can be achieved with a puck or with two hands. We make sure not to cross the hands over and cup the puck but keep the blade open so that the ability to make a play with the puck is not lost. That's a whole other topic to explain" jsOvwLHNjf0 |
