Small spaces require lighter and colder colours, such as blues and greens, which make the walls “pull back” and create a feeling of width. Inversely, strong and warm colours such as red and orange “move forward” the limits of the room, creating a feeling of closeness and engagement, which is ideal for large and cold spaces. According to this logic, it is also possible to widen a corridor or a narrow bedroom by painting the back wall in a warm colour and the side walls in a lighter colour. This way, the walls will look further apart and the room will seem shorter. To get the illusion of a larger space, the colour of the ceiling can come into play. Using a light colour, possibly with some level of gloss, will invoke a feeling of height and, if a light colour is also used on the floor – with carpet or flooring – this feeling increases even further. If you prefer patterns, you can produce the same effect by painting the wall in vertical stripes. Darker ceilings create an idea of a shorter height.
