| Video Discription | Part 1: Jazz Walks The first thing I have always done in every jazz class when starting across-the-floor is jazz walks. Jazz walks are a wonderful way to get us in our bodies and help us find our creative voices because everybody is different, and every physical body is different, so every jazz walk will be different. Your jazz walk is your own personal snowflake. Embrace it. If you see someone else doing something in their jazz walk that you like, steal it! It’s fine. It won’t look the same on you anyways. It’ll move through the filter system that is you and your personality to come out looking nothing more than vaguely similar. But on top of that, use jazz walks to explore your personality and what your body can do. At its core, jazz walks are a series of two steps. Step out with one leg then cross in front with the other, then step out again and cross in front with the other, and so on and so forth. After that, you’re free to build it however you want. Play with arms, hips, shoulders, ribs. Wink, smile, take your shirt off. The world is your oyster. All I ask is that you bring your own personal flair to it. NOTE: Traditionally, jazz walks are done staying on the balls of your feet the entire time. However, there is a version of jazz walks where you lead with your heels and move through your feet. Try both, and figure out which one works for you. Part 2: Tipping Tipping is a type of jazz walk, except now you’re going to pretend you have very high heels on the entire time and have to stay on the tips (or balls) of your feet. Know that you likely won’t travel as much when you tip as when you do a traditional jazz walk. As with jazz walks, we still step out with one foot and then cross in front with the other. However, now we’re going to stay on the balls of our feet and move through passé before every step. We’re also going to make sure we’re stepping down on a straight leg every time we tip (aka put a foot down).
