Update: If the noise comes back (which it did on mine), you likely need to replace that whole plastic pulley and the upper white plastic assembly. It is called the "Splutch Cam Kit" and it's Whirlpool part W10721967. It is VERY easy to swap out, and the parts kit is $20 or less online.
