| Video Discription | In 1938 construction began on a concentration camp which was very different to other camps which would be set up during the Second World War. Ravensbruck Concentration Camp was an all-female camp in which only women would be imprisoned within the barbed wire fences. It was known for it's horrific torture and conditions, and 130,000 prisoners passed through the gates but over 50,000 prisoners died inside of Ravensbruck. Prisoners were killed through execution, torture, a lack of food and evil treatment at the hands of guards such as Irma Grese or Maria Mandl. Ravensbruck was a training centre for around 4000 SS women who became female concentration camp guards. Many were known for their violence, and they were schooled in establishing a reign of terror over the inmates. Conditions broke down during the war in the camp, and disease was rife and each day dozens of women were dying from the terrible sanitation and also the treatment they were being subject to. After the Second World War, a number of Ravensbruck Trials took place in which many of the former guards were brought to justice, and a number were executed following the trials.
