| Video Discription | Dr. Nielson was 6 years old when she realized she was a girl. As a child, she refused to conform to become the stereotypical "girl". But as she grew older, she noticed that she was pushed more and more into her feminine role. Through this talk, Dr. Nielson advocates for the eradication of gender roles and toxic masculinity, and suggests that men are the key to stopping gender violence. Dr. Nielson is a historical musicologist specializing in gender, slavery and music in the early Islamicate courts. She is one of two Anisfield-Wolf SAGES Fellows and the Director of the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women. Her classes focus on the mission of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards of understanding human difference and include a class on the courtesan, gender segregation and the harem, comparative slavery, and a class dedicated solely to the Anisfield-Wolf book awards. Dr. Nielson has received several undergraduate teaching awards including the Richard A. Bloom, MD Award for Distinguished Teaching in the SAGES Program, the Carl F. Wittke Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the J. Bruce Jackson, MD, Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring and the Faculty Prism Award.
