| Video Discription | If, as Amadeus Mozart proclaimed, the organ is the ‘king of instruments’, the organ at the Leżajsk basilica is a king of kings. Described as ‘one of the most valuable monuments of art in Europe’, this 17th-century instrument is a truly breath-taking masterpiece of construction and ornamentation. The organ was built around 1680 by Stanisław Studziński of Przeworsk, approximately 50 years after the construction of the Bernardine basilica in which it resides. Further enhancements were made by Jan Głowiński from Kraków, who completed his work in 1693. Extravagant decoration in the form of wood carvings and gilding was then applied by the Bernardine (aka Cistercian) Order that ran the church and adjoining convent. Technically the Leżajsk organ is an amalgamation of three separate instruments, consisting of an enormous 15 x 7-metre central organ with two smaller organs on each side of it – the only organ in the world that three organists can play simultaneously. Altogether this titanic musical mechanism contains 75 stops – including the open 32’ Subcontrabas (known as the ‘horribilis’) – which equates to around 6,000 pipes, some over 10 metres long. To these were added an array of intriguing devices including a cuckoo and tympani drum. The organ has had some enhancement and restoration work over time. In 1903-4 Alexander Zebrowski applied some changes to bring the organ more in line with the Romanticism so favoured throughout the 19th century, while in 1965-68 Robert Polcyn from Poznań worked to restore the instrument’s original Baroque sound. More recently, in 2000-2003, an extensive renovation took place which was completed by the organ expert Adam Wolański. Today’s video: J. S.
