Dr. Shubha Tole, Professor of Biology at TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research), Mumbai, recieved this award named after a Zee Marathi TV serial about the life and work of Ramabai Ranade, a pioneer of the modern womens' movement in India. "Unch Maza Zoka" translates literally as "high goes my swing" and connotes an undaunted spirit that reaches for the skies. This video begins with a ~2 min film about Dr. Tole's journey, and then shows her thank you speech, in which she presents a glimpse of her personal story "How did I grow to be a scientist?" ("Me scientist ghadle tari kashi?") while thanking her parents, family members, teachers, colleagues, and her support staff at home as being crucial to her success. She closes with a perspective on the contrasting faces of modern India: a country in which the success of a neuroscientist who has the privilege of exploring the secrets of the brain is intertwined with the courage of an uneducated childcare worker who dreamed of sending her own daughters to school. Dr. Tole's speech is mostly (80%) in English but begins with Marathi and is peppered with Marathi and Hindi sentences at appropriate points in her narrative. This 15 min video concludes with a few humorous and thought-provoking words from Dr. Jabbar Patel, renowned theater and film director, who was invited to present Dr. Tole her award. This recording was taken by a hand held camera which at times gives surrealistic shots of the ceiling...but the "official" video is blocked in some countries so here's this one for folks who'd like to see it.
