"First of all, on behalf of the Director General of UNESCO, we would like to express our emotion following the terrible earthquake in Morocco, which has claimed so many lives and caused so much damage. On Saturday, we sent the first UNESCO mission to the Medina of Marrakech to assess the damage where many historic buildings have collapsed. But it's also the heritage of the entire region that has been heavily impacted. Several sources indicate that Koutoubia Mosque, included on the World Heritage Indicative List have been heavily damaged. UNESCO would like to reaffirm its solidarity with the Moroccan people and stands ready to support the Moroccan authorities in any way we can."
