| Video Discription | As your puppy develops and you begin to spend more time out of the home, you will need more than anything else to feel confident that you can quickly call your puppy back to you under a wide variety of circumstances, and so the puppy recall is essential for a relaxed and happy walk together. As with many elements of basic training, the puppy recall can be started right from day one of your ownership, starting with small and easy puppy recalls that are highly likely to work, such as using a meal as can be shown at the end of this video, all the way through to recall efforts using training lines as you can also see on this video. I like to use a Flexi lead to start with as the line recoils easily and the length of the one I am using (8m) is adequate for Ruby given her energy levels and age. In a few weeks time, we shall begin to make a gradual transition to a long training line such as the ones I provide my customers with recall issues. A key mistake to avoid with young dogs is to simply let them loose and hope for the best. This way, a young dog can easily learn that you can be ignored, it can engage with all dogs and people whether you like it or not and for me, the risk is too high. A young dog (a dog of any age come to that) should only be given the amount of freedom that it can genuinely cope with. As your trust and confidence in the dog grows, you can then give more and more freedom until the line is no longer used. Look upon it as a transition in keeping with the dog's abilities to return when called. A few points to note in relation to the recalls you see Ruby carry out: It was a day of firsts. First time I had taken chicken or food out with us on a walk. You need high-value food with an important task like the recall. Sara was not holding food as it happened and you can see how her enthusiasm to come when called was mostly motivated by the tone of voice and nice open body language. Holding Ruby for a second or two as the other person calls her can be a good way to build up the energy prior to her being released so that she goes straight to the other person. Note how I ask her to sit when she has finished the run-up and then can feed or rub her up as praise. Dogs that come in, grab a treat and then shoot off again are not quite getting it right. The release is the last part of the recall and so a dog should ideally be waiting for this before being allowed to go off again after your recall. This will be formalised more as she progresses. We used a quiet area to do these recalls so that distractions were low to allow her to focus upon us. You can see that once or twice the line was used to issue a most gentle of input to start guiding her to me after I call her when she looks initially distracted. A dog should not be yanked or treated roughly to carry out a recall. Always lots of encouragement and suitable motivators put in place so that it all stacks in your favour is the way forward. As with all the videos in this series, they are designed to help those with young puppies and are offered in the spirit of prevention of problems rather than to cure them, though the essence here is exactly what I would use to address a non-recalling dog of any age.
