This becomes a major factor while deciding the release date of films. Most of the time, filmmakers, production houses ensure two big actors' films don't clash at the box office and eat up into each other's business. However, there have been times when some of the biggest box office clashes could not be evaded. Tamil superstars Thalapathy Vijay and Ajithkumar are considered as one among such rival actors by their fans. Both top stars have their own set of fan bases so their movies don’t usually get a same-day release. But there have been few instances where both the actors had a movie release on the same day. Let’s have a look at some of the Vijay-Ajith films that got released on the same date. Kushi and Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven were released on 19 May 2000 in which Kushi was a blockbuster in Vijay’s career. The film carries a legacy. Whereas Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven had a few well-received elements but as a whole, the film failed to impress everyone. The film received mixed reviews. Friends and Dheena had a same-day release in the year 2001 on the occasion of Pongal. Both the actors had risen to stardom during the release of these films so the celebrations were high. Friends was a remake of a Malayalam film made in the same name by director Siddique, whereas Dheena was an action drama directed by the then debutant director AR Murugadoss. Both were a super-hit success. In the succeeding year, Vijay’s Bhagavathi and Ajith’s Villain both were released on the occasion of Diwali. Bhagavathi was commercially a successful film, but Villain was a blockbuster. Ajith performed a dual role for this heist drama and the film was directed by ace filmmaker KS Ravikumar. Pokiri and Aalwar got released in the year 2007. It was a Pongal festival release and Pokiri directed by Prabhu deva master, who was then a debutant director, worked well at the box office. But Ajith’s Aalwar went with no traces. After a long gap since 2007, these two actors had a same-day release during the 2014 Pongal. This time both the films worked well with a proper family drama storyline. Director Siruthai Siva and Ajith were pairing for the first time in Veeram and it went to be a good rural action drama. Whereas, Jilla directed by Nelson had a big star like Mohanlal along with Vijay which boosted the film’s success. Movies starring Vijay and Ajith Kumar have already faced off against one another, and it appears that they will do so once more during the upcoming Tamil festival ‘Pongal’ in 2023.
