With the panels being reinforced from the bottom, there’s no structural need for handrail across the top. For aesthetic purposes, you can choose to leave the top exposed or capped with a wood top or a metal top. Additionally, our base rail system utilizes the patented tilt lock technology that allows ease of installation on the job site Before you begin, inspect the area where you will be installing the baserail. Ensure that your mounting surface has sufficient backing. For most jobs, a minimum of 4″ of backing material is recommended in order to securely mount your Base Rail. (0:46) Materials/Tools We provide many of the tools needed for installation. You will need to provide: Your Viewrail Layout Drawing from your Binder A Printed Copy of your engineered drawing A Power Drill An Impact Driver A Tape Measure A Speed Square Painter’s Tape A pencil or sharpie (1:04) STEP 1: Check Your Drawing Before you begin, consult your engineered layout drawing to determine the mounting location for your base rail. It is important to keep the entire system run in mind as well as the individual base rail measurements. (1:19) STEP 2: Lay Out Your Base Rail Once you have consulted your layout drawing, layout your base rail. Make sure that you measure the overall run of the system first and then space the base rail appropriately along the line of the run. Each segment of base rail should be set with the curved side on the outside edge of the run. (1:41) Step 3: Pre-Drill Mounting Holes Now that you have your base rail properly measured, make sure that your segments are level with the edges of your deck or balcony by using a speed square. As you are placing the base rail, ensure that the center is at least 1 ½” from the edge of your blocking. Mark each of the holes with a sharpie. Then, remove the base rail and pre-drill all mounting holes. If you are drilling into wood, use an 11/32” drill bit; if you are drilling into concrete, use a 7/16” drill bit. (2:16) Step 4: Mount & Level Your Base Rail Once you have finished pre-drilling your mounting holes, place the base rail on the surface of your deck. Add the stabilizing washer before securing with the provided mounting screws. Populate your pre-drilled holes with these screws. If you are anchoring into wood, use the ½” anchor lags; if you are anchoring into concrete, use ⅜” redhead anchor bolts. It may be helpful to utilize a speedsquare at this point to insure that you are keeping the base rail square as your anchor it. If it is not level, you can fix this later by raising or lowering the glass panels. Repeat these steps until the run is complete. (3:00) Step 5: Install Glass Grips Now that your baserail is mounted, it is time to refer to your layout drawing. Your layout drawing will provide information on the measurements for your glass grips. Take the provided glass grips and prepare to install them. Match the curved side of the glass grips to the curved interior side of the base rail. Once you have installed all of the glass grips, attach the cladding on the outside to conceal the inserted glass grips. Use silicone if desired. (3:36) Step 6: Insert the Glass Panel With your glass grips installed, it is time to insert the glass panel. At this point, grab a partner or two for assistance to insert the panel and hold the glass in place. Once the panel is inserted, tighten the upper nut and lower nut with a ¾” wrench or a 19mm wrench. You can adjust the glass panel angle toward the outside by loosening the upper nut and tightening the lower nut. Or to adjust the glass panel angle inward, do the opposite. Once this is completed, install the inside cladding. When using silicone, you can hold the cladding in place with painter’s tape or a c-clamp between the panels until it is dry. (4:24) Step 7: Final Touches Now that your panel is installed, cut the gap filler to fill the empty spaces between glass panels and insert.
