Read this description. Tesla had this idea of making energy available free to the world, transmitted without wires. The tower was being built under the guise of a radio transmitter, and (possibly) it was not known to his financial backers what this device was really for - free wireless energy. His financial supporters eventually pulled the funding due to a number of possible reasons - some of those possibly being: A: The tower was just too expensive. B: When they found out the real purpose of the tower (Free Energy) they abandoned the idea for lack of profitability. C: Someone else had transmitted radio signals a long distance via a far cheaper means. This was not a defeat for Tesla. Nikola Tesla is quoted to say: "Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his work and accomplishments. The coil in the middle is completely made up (just had to put something there), and the staircase is not accurate. While you can put a degree of faith in the accuracy of the ring support at the top of the tower, it may also be slightly off.
