Mid of tree with flashing lights STORYLINE: Christians and other revellers in the West Bank city of Ramallah kicked off the Christmas season on Tuesday with an annual tree lighting ceremony in a central square. Several hundred people packed Rashid Hadaddin square to watch Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad switch on the twinkling lights. The crowd was treated to a choir and orchestra performance. Men dressed as Santa Claus rang bells and those in the crowd lit candles. A similar ceremony takes place in the biblical town of Bethlehem, where Christians believe Jesus was born. The number of Palestinian Christians has dwindled in the last few years, with many leaving because of years of violence and to find work opportunities abroad.
