| Video Discription | Xia Shuqin, witnessed the murder of most of her family during one of history’s worst atrocities, the so-called “Rape of Nanjing” in December 1937, at the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese war. You can hear her tell that harrowing story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7QzyyD2gKY Like up to 200,000 people from the Chinese army, from Nanjing city and from the surrounding villages, she found refuge in the International Safety Zone. A group of foreigners - including American missionary John Magee and German businessman John Rabe - living in Nanjing at the time, helped provide security and some food to these refugees in that part of the city where foreigners lived and worked. Around 25 camps were set up in an area the size of New York's Central Park. Though there are some reports of people inside the Zone being killed or injured by Japanese soldiers, for the most part they respected the boundaries of the Zone - as Japan did not want to provoke conflict with any of the western powers represented there. John Rabe, as a member of the Nazi party, used his position as a German ally to plead with the Japanese authorities to save the lives of Chinese people, mainly without success. John Magee had a 16 mm movie camera and took careful documentary footage of the injuries people had suffered.
