| Video Discription | What is malaria? Malaria is a clinical condition caused by the bite of a female anopheles mosquito. These mosquitoes are known to introduce various parasites into the bloodstream of the people they bite. The mosquito is known to be a vector of the disease meaning it just serves as a carrier of the causative organisms. Malaria can affect people of all ages and it is more prominent in tropical and subtropical regions. This is because the parasites are able to survive well in such conditions. What causes malaria? The parasite causing malaria is known as plasmodium and there are about five different species of this parasite known to cause malaria. Plasmodium falciparum Plasmodium vivax Plasmodium malariae Plasmodium ovale Plasmodium knowlesi Amongst these five species, falciparum is known to be more common in West Africa and causes a more severe form of malaria. How do these parasites cause malaria? When an infective female anopheles mosquito bites you, it introduces the plasmodium parasites it carries into your bloodstream. These parasites circulate in your blood and eventually lodge in your liver. The parasites then mature in the liver and get released into the bloodstream again. Once in the bloodstream, these matured parasites begin to infect the red blood cells (which are responsible for carrying oxygen to all parts of the body). Within a period of 48 to 72 hours the parasites in the red blood cells replicate and increase in so much in number such that the red blood cells begin to burst. Consequently, more parasites are released into the bloodstream and more red blood cells are infected. This continuous cycle of breakdown of red blood cells and release of more parasites is what results in the various symptoms associated with malaria. Another thing worth noting is that since malaria is transmitted by blood, it can be transferred from one person to another following transfusion of an infected blood sample, an organ transplant or use of shared needles or syringes but this is very rare. oVPzedNvZH0 |
