| Video Discription | Fire ants are aggressive, venomous insects that have pinching mandibles on the head and a sharp stinger on the rear of the body. Fire ants live in America. They were accidentally imported from south America to north America. They are aggressive, when stinging and inject venom, which causes a burning sensation. Red bumps form at the sting, and within a day or two they become white fluid-filled pustules. Commonly, workers are attacked by ants, so they should always be careful before start working. Checking area is important. Fire ant stings usually occur on the feet or legs after accidentally stepping on a fire ant mound. A local reaction is the most common reaction to fire ant stings and is characterized by an instant sense of burning, that is followed by itching and a raised, red welt on the skin that lasts for approximately four to six hours. After the welt subsides, the following day a pustule usually forms with blistering, and resolves over a week. In rare cases, severe allergic reaction can happen called anaphylaxis. The signs of anaphylaxis present within 30-40 minutes of the bite and are life threatening if not treated immediately and properly. The entire body will itch and the patient will develop difficulty breathing in addition to weakness. Recommendations: Do not disturb or stand on or near ant mounds. Be careful when lifting items (including animal carcasses) off the ground, as they may be covered in ants. Fire ants may also be found on trees or in water, so always look over the area before starting to work. First Aid: Person with a history of severe allergic reactions to insect bites or stings should consider carrying an epinephrine auto injector (EpiPen) and should wear a medical identification bracelet or necklace stating their allergy. Rub off ants briskly, as they will attach to the skin with their jaws. Antihistamines may help. Take the person to an emergency medical facility immediately if a sting causes severe chest pain, nausea, severe sweating, loss of breath, serious swelling, or slurred speech. ZpUJ87cp-Z0 |
