| Video Discription | This video is an audio-only comparison of TCS and ESU's sound decoder offerings, using the same locomotive and same speakers. I will have a follow-up video where I talk about programming the TCS decoder, its performance and my personal thoughts. About this TCS Wowsound decoder: This decoder was given to me by a friend who wanted me to do a programming tutorial of the TCS Wowsound in Chinese, as all of the instructions from TCS were in English and were difficult to comprehend. It was one of the first videos on this channel and it was one of the reasons this channel was created in the first place. My opinion of the TCS decoder: The TCS Wowsound does have more clarity and less reverberation due to its large onboard memory capacity and it does edge out on ESU for sound quality in most cases. That's where its advantages end though. The TCS decoder can be programmed through JMRI or with its onboard Audio Assist touch tone dialer, both of which I think is less intuitive than ESU's Lokprogrammer software. The TCS decoder also has lighting functions and sound functions completely separated. In order to access lights, you must double tap F8 on your DCC controller, which makes it much difficult to use if you need to control lights and sound at the same time. Lastly, the sound library of the TCS is quite limited, as you only have the three EMD prime movers, GE FDLs, and the Alco 244 and 251 as of this writing. That means no Baldwins or GEVO sounds. ESU's sound library is much bigger and ever expanding. You can upload new and updated files to the ESU decoder and even create custom sound files for the ESU Loksound V4s, where for the TCS you are stuck with what you have unless you send the decoder back to them for service. I am also personally too invested in ESU, as most factory sound models from popular manufacturers have ESU decoders installed. I have also done many aftermarket ESU installs to other locomotives I own. The TCS Wowsound is less user friendly (see reasons above) and is not appealing enough to justify switching over.
