Perched within a narrow gorge close to the source of the sacred Yamuna River, the Yamunotri Temple pays homage to Yamuna, revered as the second most holy river after the Ganges. Legend has it that a ritual dip in the waters of the River Yamuna bestows protection from untimely demise. Devotees embarking on this soul-stirring pilgrimage have the option to traverse the challenging terrain either by foot or by traditional means such as a palanquin or pony. The temple, situated at an elevation of approximately 3,233 meters above sea level, is reachable via a strenuous 3-kilometer trek from Janki Chatti, a journey that demands about 3 hours to complete. Best Time To Visit: April to June and September to November. HOW TO REACH 1. By Flight: The nearest Airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is about 200 km from Uttarkashi HQ. Taxi and bus services are available from Dehradun Airport to Barkot, Uttarkashi. 2. By Train: Rishikesh, Haridwar & Dehradun all have Railway Stations. The nearest railhead from Yamunotri is Dehradun (200 km approx). From Rishikesh/Dehradun one can take a bus/Taxi to reach Yamunotri. 3. By Road: Yamunotri is going from National Highway no 94. State transport buses play regularly between Uttarkashi/Barkot and Rishikesh/Dehradun. Local Transport Union Buses and State Transport Buses operate between Barkot/Uttarkashi and Dehradun.
