In 1948, Pakistan Govt. declared that Urdu would be national language of Pakistan. But the East Pakistan people protested against the decision as Bengali was spoken by the majority in East Pakistan. They demanded Bengali / Bangla to be one of the national languages, in addition to Urdu. On 21st February 1952, police fired on the students' rallies who were in protest of Pakistan Govt's decision. During that agitation, Rafik Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar, Abul Barkat, Abdus Salam and many others sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue. Since then, the Bengali celebrate 21February as the mother language day.
