Gunmen in car, pull out to clerics chatting STORYLINE: Hundreds of Libyan religious leaders gathered Monday in the capital Tripoli for a government sponsored conference to find a consensus on their wishes for the future of Libya. After the meeting, the clerics from across the country, representing all the major sects of Islam found in Libya, demanded that a new Libyan constitution be based on Islamic Shariah law. They also urged the transitional government to deal with tribal tensions and to disarm the former rebel units that ousted Colonel Moammar Gadhafi from power. The scholars urged Libyans to get behind the new government as it attempted to bring stability. Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, chairman of the National Transitional Council, said last month that Shariah law would be the main source of legislation in the new Libya, although he stressed it would reflect a moderate Islam. Other leaders said the matter was still to be decided.
