Close shot of Khaleda Zia STORYLINE: Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's four-party coalition appeared set to win a majority in Bangladesh's national election, according to preliminary returns on Tuesday. As ballot hand-counting for the 299 parliamentary seats continued, state television reported that unofficial results so far gave Zia's coalition 203 of the 282 seats. State television said the Awami League of Sheikh Hasina trailed with 61 seats, and small, nonaligned parties or independents won 18 seats. Voting for the 300th seat was halted after a candidate suddenly died before Monday's vote. Official results weren't expected until Wednesday. The coalition or party that controls Parliament will have until October 15 to form a new government and select the country's next prime minister. Zia's main opponent, Sheikh Hasina, immediately challenged the count claiming vote rigging had taken place.
