Point Lookout was the largest Union-run prisoner-of-war facility during the Civil War—the prison’s population peaked at twenty-two thousand. In all, roughly fifty thousand POWs were held at the camp. Over three thousand perished from exposure, disease, malnutrition, and alleged inhumane treatment. The video above includes photographs of the burial ground monuments, Confederate Memorial Park, replica Union guard base, and reconstructed POW camp.
