| Video Discription | New Film Historical Research beyond the National Archive In the last decade, there has been a growing film scholarly interest in films beyond the feature fiction film and the cinematic screening context and especially on films commissioned by companies, municipalities, governments and organizations, often referred to as “Useful cinema” (Acland & Wasson 2012; Zimmermann 2011). This paper argues that the study of “Useful cinema” requires a move beyond the national film archives from which film history traditionally has been written. Instead, other types of archives on the local or regional level become essential when approaching these kinds of films and their broader production and exhibition contexts.
