El Cid, also known as Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, was a Castilian knight and ruler in medieval Spain. He fought with both Christian and Muslim armies during his lifetime, earning the Arabic honorific “as-Sayyid” (meaning “the Lord” or “the Master”), which evolved into El Çid. El Cid reclaimed the Taifa of Valencia from Moorish control during the Reconquista, ruling the principality as its lord from 1094 until his death in 1099. His wife, Jimena Díaz, inherited the city and maintained it until 1102 when it was reconquered by the Moors. El Cid’s tomb is a significant historical site, and he remains a popular Spanish folk hero and national icon. His life and deeds are celebrated in popular culture.
