| Video Discription | In the first part of clip the Krupp K 5 railway gun is shown, a weapon that saw action bombarding British targets across the Strait of Dover. These guns could fire a 243kg shell out to a range of 64 kilometers. The example in the clip can be seen placed on a Vögele turntable, a more sophisticated manner of aiming the piece than simply moving it back and forth on a curved section of track. In the last part of the clip the unique 21cm Kanone 12 in Eisenbahnlafette (21cm K 12 (E)) railway gun is visible, it was one of the longest range artillery pieces that ever saw service and only two examples were built. The K 12 (E) was mounted on a simple box-girder carriage, which was carried on two subframes which were in turn mounted on double bogies. The barrel was mounted in a ring cradle with a hydropneumatic recoil system. Two more hydropneumatic systems were connected to the subframes, which allowed the entire carriage to recoil just under a meter. For transport the gun itself was disconnected from its recoil system and drawn back some 1.5 meters to reduce the mounting's overall length and allow it to fit in the normal railroad loading gauge. The barrel's extreme length of 33.3 meters required external bracing to prevent it from bending under its own weight. Its trunnions were placed as far forward as possible to balance the barrel and minimize the force necessary to elevate it. This placed the breech perilously close to the ground and a hydraulic jacking system was built in each subframe to elevate the mount by 1 meter. However it was impossible to load the weapon in this position and it had to be lowered between every shot. The gun fired high explosive shells weighing just over 100 kg that left the muzzle at over 1.5 kilometers per second and had a maximum range of 115 kilometers. Deployed with Artillerie-Batterie 701 (E) the guns regularly rained shells down on coastal towns in England, and shell fragments from this gun were recovered as far as Rainham in Kent, 88 kilometers from the nearest point on the French coast. uI8eCWKtsrk |
