The artist explains how he used prosthetics and makeup to add decades to the actors’ faces. The newest season of “True Detective” finds Mahershala Ali playing the same character — Detective Wayne Hayes — at three different ages. His performance is incredibly believable, and was made possible by the realistic aging FX, which turned him into a convincing 75-year old man. We visited Marino at his studio, Prosthetics Renaissance — also known as ProRen FX. They’ve worked on a long list of Hollywood films, including “Black Swan,” “Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Birdman.” ProRen is also the team behind Heidi Klum’s famous Halloween costumes.
