| Video Discription | (17 Jan 1995) Russian/Nat The powerful Russian army is devastating the war-torn capital of Chechnya. Chechen fighters and residents in Grozny are barely holding onto their city. In the centre of the capital buildings and roads have been reduced to smoking piles of rubble. Thousands of Russian reinforcements are never far away. Columns of troops are training and preparing for battle in their encampment in Mozdok, North Ossetia. APTV were the only television crew given access this key Russian base. As Russia's drive to take central Grozny was stalled by fierce Chechen resistance, an APTV crew filmed the Russian side of the front line just outside the city at their base at Mozdok, North Ossetia. The crew returned with these remarkable pictures of Russian troops in action. The Russians had hoped they could crush the Chechen rebellion using untried and mostly teenage conscript soldiers. But they've since added more seasoned troops to their forces, hoping to subdue the bitterly determined Chechen irregulars. The marshalling base for the entire Russian operation in the Caucasus has been the North Ossetian town of Mozdok - now a vast armed encampment. But as Russian troops continued to pound Grozny on Monday, Moscow appealed for immediate peace talks to end the secessionist war. In a rare Kremlin address on Chechnya, Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin went on national television Monday night urging negotiations "with all interested parties and forces" and a simultaneous ceasefire. The Chechen leader, Dzhokhar Dudayev, has yet to respond to the Russian Prime Minister's offer. It may be unlikely that he will, as long as his soldiers are holding back the mighty Russian army. For the moment at least, these Russian conscripts will continue to return to base after their daily assaults on Grozny.
